Prefers moist, well-drained, acid soil in partial shade -
Natives of China, Japan, and SouthEast Asia with glorious elegant flowers of deep, bright, vivid colors
and light fragrance. Displayed at Korean weddings as far back as 1200 BC,
camellias represent longevity and faithfulness. Today, Camellia is the
state flower of Alabama. Camellias are known as "The Queen of
Ornamental Shrubs" for their flowers, blooming season, foliage,
fragrance, and growth habit.
Leaves are glossy and remains deep, shiny-green all year. Container plants
grow to 4 to 6 feet. Plants can withstand temperature as low as -10 Celcius. High temperatures and long days are needed to develop their
flower buds. But cool temperatures and short days are required for these
buds to open.
